What’s *your* superpower?
Hi everyone,
Hope you're having a great week.
This week I want to talk to you about a unique sense of purpose that everyone has, and how to tap into it.
It is what I call your "superpower" - and I think it's something we can easily forget in the process of "doing" what we do.
Superheroes everywhere!
At Virtuoso Legal, we come across and assist all sorts of businesses.
Something I take away from everyone I speak to is there's always that one thing they're super passionate about.
It could really be anything! And to this day it continues to amaze me what people get their kicks out of.
The diversity of our client base speaks volumes to this.
Whether it's:
- revolutionising living spaces
- helping people better communicate with each other
- medical technology to help people with unique conditions
...and everything between. (And I mean everything!)
You see that sparkle in people's eyes when it comes to talking about what they do.
It is almost as if we all have this "one thing" that has a magnetic pull that draws us to it time and again.
For me it is:
Helping people realise the fruits of their eureka moments. Taking that spark of an idea it from the smallest seed to the mightiest oak.
You can see how that would be satisfying!
So we have this magnet pulling us toward something... and it's down to us to work out the logistics of satisfying that pull each day.
Finding your why
You probably think this concept is familiar.
I mean who hasn't heard of "Find Your Why", which is part of a bit of a revolutionary TED talk by Simon Sinek.
Here he talked about the power of linking everything you do to a fundamental reason or motive.
He correlated this to leadership and brand positioning that is more compelling to followers.
You can listen to his TEDTalk on this here - it's really good. It is very convincing.
What I'm talking about is a slightly different perspective on this "why" though.
Tapping in
It is all to do with having that deeper level to "tap into" when you need to do something to serve that passion.
I think that is something you can only really do if you've reinforced that passion time and time again.
To be able to tap into that deeper level there are a few steps you need to take.
Step 1: Define it (and write it down)
The first step is to write down, in as simple wording as possible what the source of your superpower is. Mine is above (did you notice?)
It is important that there is no "fluff" to this - and it is communicated in the easiest to understand way possible. It's an "elevator pitch" about why you do what you do the way you do it.
You'll find that the easier it is to communicate, the more defined and powerful it is. You should be able to say it in a way that anyone on the street would understand.
Next, write it down, and put it in a few places that you see every day. This is your North Star and a constant reminder of where your energy comes from.
Step 2: Align all your smaller everyday actions to it
The next step is all about reinforcement but in a thousand little ways every day. It's about thinking about how the many little ways we work and live can be attuned to that deeper purpose.
This can be practical or even metaphorical "alignment". This means making Virtuoso Legal even better at supporting innovators. So we're constantly looking at how we function and how to improve that.
It may also be more abstract. It might be about seeking to start the kinds of conversations in everyday life that help plant those seeds I was talking about above. (I.e. it's a big reason behind this newsletter!)
This is all about weaving that purpose into everything, formal and informal, big and small. In doing so it becomes a driving force behind everything we do.
It is said that doing this also creates a more satisfying lifestyle, knowing that what you're doing is all part of a unified mission.
Step 3: Test your comfort zone
Then there are those times to "tap in" like I was talking about above.
Now you've 1) established what it is that drives you and 2) aligned everything you already do toward it...
You're in the position to tap into that superpower to try something outside of your comfort zone.
So what are those big-ticket things that you'd dream of doing - but require that extra push into discomfort?
Now is the time to do it - as when the going gets tough you can dig deep into that clearly defined purpose, and you have thousands of smaller examples of how you've tapped into it before.
It's the harder things in life that are the things most worth doing.
But having that knowledge of your superpower in your back pocket? It means taking that leap is just that little bit easier than it would have been without.
Much easier if you hadn't built yourself up to it with a clearly defined rationale and history of fulfilling it each and every day.
I look forward to seeing what your next big step is.
Wrapping up
I hope that you've found this newsletter inspiring and helpful.
I am curious, what is the "source" of your superpower?
If there is anything I can do to help - I would love to help you take that next step.
Get in touch the usual way and we can have a chat.
Have a great weekend,
Liz
