What does a good lawyer actually do?

Hi everyone, I hope you had a nice weekend.

Today I have a question for you - what does your lawyer do?

In the previous newsletter, I discussed some common misconceptions about legal cases. But there are many ill-conceived stereotypes about lawyers, too.

Let me explain.

The law is our toolbox

Lawyers (especially if you're a specialist) spend decades becoming technical masters of their tools.

Whereas specialist doctors use the latest medical technology, lawyers become adept with key legal arguments in their specialism.

But the law is only a tool for getting the job done.

The best lawyers are also aware of the broader set of circumstances surrounding a legal case and that solving the problem is only one part of doing the best job for their client.

Solving the problem is only a part of it

Think of it this way.

You need a root canal and you go to a specialist dentist. (Apologies for the dentist analogy again, it's just a great metaphor for something painful that needs sorting!)

You arrive at your appointment safe in the knowledge that you have chosen the most technically capable dentist available.

You leave the appointment and your tooth is fixed. But you still have a bad feeling about the whole thing. Why?

Well, after you booked your appointment you didn't hear anything back.

You emailed questions about what it would entail, how long it would take, and if you'd need painkillers or time off to recover. You didn't hear back, and that led to worry and a couple of sleepless nights.

When you arrived you sat in the waiting room and weren't acknowledged or looked after.

During the procedure the dentist talks to you about what's happening, but it's all confusing technical language.

After paying for the procedure, you never heard from them again, or learned about ways to improve your dental health moving forwards.

Still, the job was done properly. But something just doesn't sit right.

Would you go back to that dentist again? Maybe. But probably not.

Solving the problem, quickly and properly, is a given.

But perhaps equally if not more important is how you go about solving the problem.

A partner in your corner

Yes, we can solve IP issues better than most - but it's as important to us to provide clarity, support and comfort to our clients.

Like an impending dentist appointment, a legal issue can be the cause of sleepless nights - but it shouldn't be.

We pride ourselves on going above and beyond in supporting our clients through what can be a difficult time.

That means not only solving the legal issue for them, but being a partner in their corner, every step of the way.

What this means in real terms to our clients is:

  • Speaking in plain English about their situation, and our strategy to help them.

  • Calling a spade a spade, and being upfront about any issues as and when they arise.

  • Understanding their business and commercial goals - and working toward their best outcome.

  • Being "on call" and answering any questions or concerns they have about what's going on responsively.

  • Providing information and education around the legal bit, so they can understand our approach and tactics in the case.

  • Providing support and advice to minimise the risk of issues arising again in the future.

For us, and other good lawyers, success isn't just winning the legal argument - but rather helping our clients sleep at night - safe in the knowledge that everything is being taken care of.

Do you agree?

Ultimately this is what's best for keeping the wheels rolling - and helping their business continue to grow.

Wrapping up

Most lawyers should have this outlook on the work that they do.

But whilst stereotypes are often incorrect - there is always an element of truth to the,.

If you're finding yourself feeling something is "off", it might be worth thinking about.

As always, if there's anything you need support with, my door is always open - and even if it's not IP, I'll happily point you in the right direction.

Just get in touch the usual way, by dropping me an email.

Wishing you the best for this week,

Liz
