  • Ensure you have a fair written contract with your website developer
  • Consider ownership of Intellectual Property rights in your site
  • Check that you own the domain name to your website
  • Agree a time-frame and detailed specification for website development work
  • Try to agree staged payments linked to specific milestones of the work to be carried out
  • Who will host your website? You may need an additional contract for this work
  • Ensure you have access to your website at all times
  • Ensure that you can assign all your rights in the website to third parties
  • Ensure the developer is under obligations of confidentiality
  • Obtain warranties from your website developer (e.g. that he has the necessary skill and expertise, he owns IP in the underlying code and design of your site, he has necessary consents and licenses for material used on your website).
